About Us & How It Got Started

The Newham Claimants Union  was set up in 1981 and was created to help those who are disadvantaged and need to claim for some kind of financial support.

We are a Union, not an advice bureau with professional advisors or a long queue of clients. We work as a collective, so if someone has a problem, everyone gets a chance to help.

The answer may come from someone who has had to claim for a while and knows how the system works or it may be a wild idea from the newest member that works.

Claiming for financial support can be very complex and no one can possibly hold all the information in thier head.

So if you would like help with claiming benefits or have some free time to help another with advise and formfilling. You are in the right place.

We are of all ages and accept all communities. Every member is either a claimant or people who understand what it is to exsist on benefits.

The Newham Claimants Union has been unfunded since its creation (except for 2004 - to pay for a change of address, stationary and a PO Box). We wouldn't want to take regular funding because we want to fight for our rights without worrying about who we upset.

So if you need some help with claiming for benefits or have some free time for another for advice and formfilling, you are in the right place.
